Around The Site
All the buildings at the Shieling Project have been built with school groups and volunteers, and we are really proud of them. We have a large classroom which is great for meals, events, craft sessions and keeping out of the rain and midges. We have a beautiful kitchen were you will help us prepare all the food. And two sets of we have excellent and clean compost toilets and hand-washing areas.
In 2018 we completed a three year project to build our inspirational bothy accommodation. Designed, built and installed by Northwoods Construction from Ullapool, the six steel clad bothies each have three double bunks in and offer a beautifully built simple shelter for your stay. The word ‘bothy’ comes from the Gaelic, and the bothan airigh – the shieling hut – is the start of the story of these buildings. The ‘tin’ bothies, houses, schools and churches around the Highlands of Scotland were also a big inspiration for our new accommodation. Bringing this story into the present and future, our bothies feature a huge south facing window for solar gain heating, local timber and a high quality finish. We hope you will enjoy them as much as we do!
Some of our staff live on site, as do all our livestock. We have our workshop, byre and dairy area here too. The site is ten acres and we often head out and up the glen to explore more widely.
