The Shieling Project

Bringing the Highland landscape alive for young people and teachers

Residental experiences

Shieling life is simple: herding and milking, cooking and cleaning, learning, exploring and playing.

“I thought it was a good day because I was happy; I learnt, I laughed, I played” P7 pupil.

If you come to learn with us you will find out how to cut and dry peats, restore shieling huts, gather natural dyes, weave and felt wool. You will learn about the place-names, create your own shieling poetry and stories, map the area, study the plants and animals, milk our cow and make butter and cheese. Our modern shieling inspired camp is a great place to learn about and take part in sustainable building, think about waste and energy use, and plant trees to help the woodland around us.

We provide learning experiences for classes of up to 33 children aged between 9 and 14. We provide day trips and residentials, linked to larger projects within the school.  Our learning opportunities bring together history, geography, sciences, language and enterprise, themes of sustainable development education and global citizenship, all anchored in a fun and memorable experience.  Please get in touch to find out prices and book a place.
