The Shieling Project

Bringing the Highland landscape alive for young people and teachers

Learning resources

When you book with the project you will be sent a resource pack which includes a DVD and hardcopy learning ideas and activities to undertake at your school.  You will also have access to our online materials and MapBlog

The DVD will introduce your class to the project and the site, and ask a series of questions under themes of Landscape, Language and Food. The resources will provide suggestions for lessons, helpful links and resources for you to pursue those questions both indoors and outdoors. For example: Food (you might explore food miles, budgeting and meal planning, and shopping for food when you visit us), Landscape (including learning about and finding local shielings, farms and farmer’s markets, introducing some basic upland geology, geography and ecology), Language (exploring shieling poems, songs and place-names).
